James M. O'Brien III

Jim O'Brien practices business and entertainment law with Poyner Spruill, LLP. He works with clients in all aspects of the entertainment industry, including film financing, film fund formation, co-production deals, production issues, and distribution. He advises on contract matters, entity selection/formation, shareholders’ agreements, angel investment, venture capital investment, strategic alliances, and protection of confidential information and intellectual property.
Jim has represented directors, producers, studios, on-screen talent and has acted as counsel to many established and emerging film, television, and other entertainment companies. Jim’s motion picture credits include “Moving Midway,” “Cold Storage,” “Bar Starz,” “Three Days in Vegas,” “The List,” “A Dance for Bethany,” and “Night Feeders.”
Jim is a member of the North Carolina Film Council, director of the Cucalorus Film Festival, and chairs the Music and Film Committee of the North Carolina Bar Association’s Sports and Entertainment Law Section.
